When your tooth needs something less extensive than a cap but larger than a small filling, a dental inlay or onlay is a perfect choice.
What Are Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays and onlays serve to repair areas of teeth that are too large to restore with a filling. They cover a more extensive surface area, hence the reason why they are often referred to as “partial crowns” or “three-quarter crowns.”
While an onlay covers a larger area of the biting surface (including the cusps of your teeth), inlays go inside of the tooth and only cover a portion of the outer areas, more like a large filling.
As with a crown, inlays and onlays are custom-made to fit your tooth and then delivered at a separate appointment about two weeks later. Our lab customises the shape and colour so that the new restoration fits precisely into place while enhancing the overall appearance of the teeth being treated.
Advantages of Partial Crowns
Inlays and onlays are less invasive than conventional crowns, making it possible to preserve a larger portion of healthy tooth structure.
While a large filling could offer short-term benefits, it would not be able to withstand normal biting and chewing forces, causing the tooth to fracture over time. Instead of completely covering a tooth with a crown, inlays and onlays offer added integrity in a more conservative manner.
